Muslims often time focus on the wrong bad deeds when criticizing themselves. For example, when asked what’s wrong with the ummah, many start their list with, “Muslims are drinking alcohol and doing drugs. They are having pre-marital sex and ignoring prayer.”

And I agree, Muslims are doing all those things. But I don’t see those things to be the major problem with the state of Islam. The problems I see are murder, theft, extortion, bribery, political corruption, spousal abuse, child abuse, women’s rights, dogma and of course terrorism. These are far bigger problems in Islam than drinking and sleeping around.

Yet, we don’t often find Muslims listing those as the major problems. Reflexively, we start listing off things that often don’t harm other people. A Muslim that drinks is mostly hurting themself, not other Muslims or non-muslims. A Muslim sleeping around is risking bringing a baby into this world unplanned, but sleeping around is also mostly harming the person that is sleeping around, and not other people.

So, why do we discount things like murder and focus on smaller deeds?
